Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 Transkei, South Africa. His father was Henry Mandela of the Tembu tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University of Fart Hare and the University of Withwatesrad and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961. Mandela served 27 years in prison before his release in 1990 at the age of 72 and was elected the first African-American President in South Africa in 1994. He retired from political life in 1999. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his shining example of the incredible strength of the human spirit to persevere the pursuit of freedom.
